“A Dream: The Birthplace of Progression”
By: Marquez Hughley
As we commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his notable contributions to our society, I’m reminded of “the dream” he had concerning our nation and the world. The civil liberties and equality that we now enjoy were envisioned by Dr. King and expressed in his “I Have A Dream” speech nearly 50 years ago. On August 28, 1963, Dr. King stood up at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC and emphatically spoke about his dream. He shared with the vast crowd the vision of a new day in America; a time when racial inequality would not exist; a time when people would not simply be judged by the color of their skin, but rather by the content of their character. This was all part…of his dream.
I can identify with Dr. King when comes to having big dreams. I too have seen the dawn of a new day before the rest of the world, and I’m also committed to the process that will bring the vision to fruition. Dr. King and I also share a common bond in terms of alma mater, both of us being educated at the prestigious Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. The riveting statue of Dr. King, positioned in front of the chapel named in his honor, is hard to miss while on campus. I know that Morehouse was as instrumental in the grooming of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as it has been for me for the past three and half years. As a graduating senior in 2012, I have pledged my life as Dr. King did in 1948, to live up to our school’s great call to global leadership, service and excellence after I leave these hallowed grounds. His dream lives on today, and my dream for Gigaré will live on as well.
During the fall semester of my freshmen year, I had a dream to start a Men’s Business Professional Wear clothing line called, “Gigaré – A King’s Collection.” It started as a dream, but now it is a reality. From that original vision, we’re still expanding our dream in terms of our brand’s expectations. We believe that we are one of the best, and we’re confident that the world will soon agree as well. We want our company to make an impact in the world, far surpassing the quality of our product line. For this reason, Gigaré Lifestyle Magazine has been created and released to the public. This magazine will educate, equip, and empower all of its readers to live their best life; My team and I are committed to that goal.
In closing, Dr. King’s dream has progressed into something that he only could see by a glimpse in 1948. I believe that dreams are the birthplace of progression; and from this place of vision, we can see the entire world change for the better. I don’t know about you, but Gigaré Lifestyle Magazine and Gigaré, Inc. will continue to dream……..and dream big!
