One of the things that I’ve learned about life is that you should never get comfortable where you are. I’m not saying that you should not be content with where you are, because then you fail to enjoy and appreciate each moment of your life. What I’m really emphasizing is the fact that you should never get satisfied to the point that you stagnate or stop growing and becoming more. I’ve recently graduated from Morehouse College with a degree in Finance.  This is my second Bachelor’s degree; the first being a degree in Theology.  I’m a non-traditional student, having gone into the military right after my high school graduation. I joined the U.S. Army in 1999 and became a Paralegal for the military for almost six years. I received my first degree while I was in the Army, and this last degree was received in May 2012.  Currently, I’m preparing to take the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) because it’s time to take it to the next level.

What does the next level look like for me? It means that I must take the necessary steps to be accepted into graduate school; and after I’m accepted, to enroll in classes that will put me on track towards my goal of earning a MBA degree.  You see, I believe that education is a lifelong commitment. Even after I earn my Doctorate degree in the future, I will still be committed to furthering my education in some shape or form. Whether it’s reading books or conducting some kind of research, my life will continually be enriched by new information and discovery. I encourage you to adopt the same attitude in life.  Keep education as one of the founding pillars of values that represent who you are. Far too many people do not value higher education, and their lives suffer because of it. They are often not qualified for middle and top level positions simply because the minimum requirement may demand at least a 4-year degree or higher. To miss out on an opportunity because you failed to understand the need for furthering your education is not only a sad case, but truly unnecessary; especially since there are so many programs that will allow you to obtain a degree or degrees based on your individual circumstance.

I think it is a waste of life if you live it frivolously. You must possess more gravity and more vitality than that.  If we set goals for ourselves and we reach them, we must set out on new journeys toward achievement and fulfillment. Stretch yourself. Don’t be afraid to “push the envelope” in life. Get out of your comfort zone. Enjoy this life we have by exploring as much of it that’s possible during your lifetime. Continuing your pursuit of education will help to spark that curiosity that’s needed to want to experience all that this planet has to offer.  I’m not the type of person that believes that education gives us our individual purpose in life. I believe that God gives us our purpose and education helps to enhance us to fulfill of our purpose; it should improve our ability to perform.  The more we know the more we can lower the probability of error and failure as we live our lives. This does not mean that we won’t make mistakes; it just means that we should have more hits than misses on a day-to-day basis.

With all this being said, don’t think that pursuing education is easy. Just ask a college student who is going to school full-time, working part-time, and trying to balance their personal lives at the same time. Or you can ask the man or woman who is a non-traditional student, working full-time, has a family to take care of, a spouse to keep happy, and other responsibilities that are all demanding their time. They would quickly let you know that it is not easy! Nobody said it was easy; we said it was worth it! Keep yourself moving forward; never allowing your last success to become your “last success”.  You have to let go to go on. Let go of your last accomplishment so that you can go after new ones. There’s more out there waiting to be discovered – waiting to be achieved. Don’t take a back-seat role in regards to pursuing your dreams. Get in the driver’s seat and map out your journey.  Our education will help with our pursuit of destiny. It does not matter how great the goals you seek; Keep your eyes on the prize, your education on the rise, and you will experience continued success….from peak to peak.
