Disney has given us another great family movie full of heart, adventure, and the journey to self discovery. So the story starts before the “movie”, three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast South Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped — and no one today knew why.

“Moana” is an adventure about a spirited teenager who steps up to the plate to accept her “call of destiny” to seek out the demigod (Maui) to set things right after a terrible ancient curse threatens her home land. Moana has such a “patriotic” heart. She was genuinely looking for the best way to serve her country and save it from destruction. From a young age, she sat at her grandmother’s feet to hear the stories of her people and their great history. Being the Chieftain’s daughter, she wanted to follow the legacy of leadership but she desired to follow her own dreams to answers the Ocean’s call. A familiar dilemma for many young adults as it is time to move into the next phase of their lives. I saw a new and diverse interpretation of the age old question: “Do I follow my dreams or do I follow the expectations of others? This became such a beautiful “coming of age” story while honoring the Polynesian culture on the big screen. Moana is a fun, exciting, and wonderful movie and just right for your treasured family!
