Summer Time…Travel Time
So Many Highways, Yet One Destination: Adventure

By: T.S. Wilson – “Faith”

Yes…yes…yes! It is officially summer time just about everywhere south of the equator; and that sparks a natural desire, interest and will for people to travel. Sometimes near, maybe just an hour or two away and other times further – five to ten hours by car, train, plane, boat – possibly to the other side of the world. This season offers a great opportunity for adventurous moments with the family or friends or a solo moment of solitude; possibly all three. For me personally, there are a few songs that come to mind and allow me to travel:

Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer by Nat King Cole ’63

Hot Fun in the Summertime by Sly & The Family Stone ’69

Summertime by DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince ’91

Amazing how our minds do so much traveling without us ever physically moving!!!

Now, come along and take three short literary journeys with me..

Journey #1
I was recently blessed to travel through several beautiful cities within the county of Los Angeles. For some odd reason, I witnessed quite a few breakdowns on the side of the roads. Me being me, I typically ask people if help is in route and/or is their cell phone working. Even if it means holding up traffic for 30 more seconds; especially if it’s dark, rainy or very hot/cold and there are children present.

Sometimes, in this journey of life, our dreams may break down on the side of the road. While disappointing and even frustrating, this is actually a grand opportunity. Much like when it happens with the car and we begin to analyze the many reasons “why” the car broke down – we can do the same when our dreams breakdown. Did we plan accordingly? Did we make the right phone calls? Did we utilize every possible resource?

While the dream may need a tow and repairing or even rebuilding – you can still pursue it!!! Lubricate every thought, get your wheels of creativity rolling, change your spark plugs of hope, rev up your engine of action and get back on the road. Sometimes it may even be an entirely new dream with a new path. Embrace it, enjoy it and elevate in it the same way you would do if you had to get a new car.

We must remember that breakdowns are opportunities of reflections not disasters for permanent dysfunction. Should you see someone else’s dream broke down on the side of the road, ask if they need your help and get them back on the road too!!!

Journey #2
A few months ago, I took a drive up to Topanga Canyon Trails. It’s a 20-minute drive from Pacific Coast Highway and Highway 27 to the actual trail. On a road like that, it can seem like it takes forever. I can still recall every sharp turn, windy narrow road and cliff that existed along the route. Yet, on that beautiful crystal clear skies day, there were these views that were beyond majestic!!!

As I was leaving, it hit me. No matter how far away our dreams, our goals, our visions may seem – with persistence, eagerness and a good road map, we will see a victorious view; and for many of us, it will be exceedingly abundantly above all we could ask, think or imagine. So, stay on course and continue to pursue your journey no matter how many sharp turns, windy narrow roads and cliffs you have to navigate through or by. Travel safely and enjoy the majestic views along the way.

Journey #3
During the rainy season that we had here in L.A., I prepared some hot water for a delicious warm mug of hot chocolate. That’s right!!! Good ole’ fashioned hot chocolate. Now, you can only imagine where I’m going with this one. There are times in our lives when we must be able to access those things that bring us warmth, comfort, peace, tranquility and/or joy. For some of us, that may be a trip to Europe, a drive to Beverly Hills for lunch, a week in the Hamptons, etc. For others, it may be a workout at the gym, a walk in the park, a good book, music or time with God.

These moments allow us to regroup, refocus, rejoice, relax, receive, recharge, reclaim, reconnect and refuel. Whatever it is, you owe it to yourself to have those moments. Now go and create your own “Hot Chocolate” List.

And just in case you still need to travel… Here are a few other roads you can travel down safely:

Hebrews 12:14 – Follow peace with all men and holiness…
Genesis 15:15 – And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace…
John 14:27 – Peace I leave with you…

Romans 15:13 – Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace…
2 Chronicles 20:27 – Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehosphat in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for the Lord had made them to rejoice over their enemies.
Psalms 89:15 – Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound…

1 Corinthians 15:57 – But thanks be to God…
1 John 5:4 – For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world…
2 Samuel 23:12 – But he stood in the midst of the ground, and defended it, and slew the Philistines…

And on that note, enjoy your summer travels!!!
