The Power of Peace

By: T.S. Wilson – “Faith”

John 16:33 – These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

This time of year is typically set aside for traveling, locally and globally, especially with friends and/or family. Some of us prepare for these great vacations months in advance; and sometimes for over a year in advance. Why? Because we look forward to escaping the day to day routine of the “same ole’ pattern” of life. Even if that pattern is interesting and filled with zest, we just want to escape and get away. Vacations offer us something new, something exciting, and something to explore. And while all of this is true and getting away is fun, the ultimate vacation on this journey called life is DESTINATION RELAXATION – THE POWER OF PEACE.

Close your eyes for just a brief moment and think about it… When you go away and things are left undone, things are hanging in the air – and projects, meetings, contracts are pending, etc. You will allow your mind to meditate on all that “stuff” while you are away. Some of us even pack our laptops and/or tablets so we can get a little work done in between the fun. THAT IS NOT A VACATION. That is not relaxation. Yes, physically and geographically you have relocated yourself but mentally you are still right there in the midst of the business of life. For whatever reason you cannot allow yourself to truly let go and unwind.

Personally speaking, this analogy is similar to suicide in the sense that typically it is in that moment of being overwhelmed by the pressures of life that you decide to quit. It is in those moments of feeling utterly disconnected from hope and being overloaded with the chaotic and distorted thoughts of “there is nothing else you can do” that you are unable to let go and you give up. You just throw your hands up and you decide to give up on life. It is at that point that you decide that no matter what you have tried it all appears quite unbearable. You find yourself in a place where you cannot let go of the pressure, the stress, the hurt, the disappointment, the emotional scars; nor unwind from that stale place of uselessness.

The fact is each of us either know someone personally or indirectly that has battled with suicidal thoughts; that is battling right now; or that unfortunately lost the battle and are now gone because of suicide. This is why we must reach a personal space and place within ourselves – DESTINATION RELAXATION – THE POWER OF PEACE. Understand this, I am speaking to you from personal experience. Yes, I could provide evidence based statistics; but we all know that suicide is on the rise despite the fact that treatment is available through medication, counseling, and therapy. Some people are still unable to be in a place of intrinsic peace. Often, it as at this point that an individual could find themselves easily subjected to taking their life into their own hands. THAT IS NOT THE ANSWER, NOR IS IT THE PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE!

It is our duty and responsibility to live this life to the fullest; to make the best out of every situation; and to embrace our tribulations with total confidence – because no matter what, OUR LIVES MATTER! Each and everyone of us has a specific, unique and awesome purpose to fulfill; and suicide is NOT a part of the plan. The plan does include being in a space and a place that is surrounded; that is padded and sealed with the supernatural peace of GOD. This place will comfort you when situations arise. It will speak life when all odds are against you; and things appear to be in a dead state. It will give you protection; so when life throws you an unexpected grenade bomb of disaster and tragedy, you may get a little burnt; but the power of peace will sustain you.

I could list hundreds; possibly thousands of people who have taken their lives in just the past few years. Here are just a few I remember: Waylon, 11 year old boy from Swain County who committed suicide because of being bullied; Anthony Bourdain, Kate Spade, John Ligro, a father in New York who lost his custody battle; Phyllis Hyman, Amy Weinstat, Don Cornelius, Chris Lighty, Robin Williams, Whitney Houston; and Lord knows this list could go on and on – and not too mention, the significant increase in children, ages 8 – 18 years old.

Whatever you do, please continue to keep these families lifted up in prayer. Also, please continue to keep those who are near and dear to you who have experienced the loss of a loved one due to suicide lifted up in prayer as well. And as much as possible, check on them by way of a personal visit, video chat or a phone call; just to let them know that you love them, you care and that you are here for them. The coldest thing about suicide is that there are no boundaries, no limits and no lines that suicide has limitations to except THE POWER OF PEACE.

If you or anyone you know is battling with suicidal thoughts, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Line: 800-273-8255. Please seek spiritual guidance and direction from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Here are just a few scriptures you can hold on to:

1 Peter 5:7 – Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Isaiah 26:3 – Thou wilt keep [him] in perfect peace, [whose] mind [is] stayed [on thee]: because he trusteth in thee.

James 3:18 – And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
