A Number In? or…A Member Of?

At a young age, we’ve been conditioned with the idea that a family is a group consisting of two parents, brothers and sisters, cousins and relatives. Well, growing up and being a member of a couple of communities and groups, I’ve been hearing the term, “Family” repeated over and over, and this got me to thinking. Why would groups or communities refer to themselves as (a family) since we aren’t truly related? It is not what we’ve been taught then. I am sure that this word is more important than we think, and has a different meaning.

I can tell you from a personal experience that a family is a group consisting of individuals who aspire to make you feel that you are appreciated, valued, respected and unconditionally loved. This feeling is a result of them consistently adding value to you; and pushing you to become more by being you. Allow me to dive more into this powerful and important concept called “family.”

When God sent Adam and Eve, the origin and the incubator of all human beings to earth, He had everything created and ready for them as the base; where they will build upon to help design the beautiful earth with all what they were equipped with and SERVE the humanity. Through them, the concept started and human reproduction began, where it spread and evolved.

Going back to the original term in the mid 19th century, the word “Family” came from the Latin word, “Famulus” and it means, “Servant”.

Wow … the essence of family is service!

When I think of a servant, I think of a leader! A servant leader who is:

  • Fortified
  • Affirmative
  • Model
  • Initiative
  • Loyal
  • Yearner

A family always starts with servant leaders; those with a mission and have the ability to decide and be responsible.

Let’s take for example a man and a woman who agreed to unite forever towards a journey called life; and when a new member is born, it is the responsibility of the two leaders to show the meaning of the term, “family” and lead by example; the more newborn members, the easier the process of leading them through becomes; because then it is not only two leaders showing the way, but there are those who grew up (reproduced) as well.

If we think of it, this process can be applied in any type of setting, whether it is a community, an organization or a company. There must be a decision made and a full responsibility taken; then a healthy partnership, because no one can start anything big alone. Nothing can move forward if there is no mission. Ethics are key and finally reproduction is a necessity to keep evolving and growing

Understanding the term “Family” will help us focus on the important factor of it; and that is the “roots.”

The roots, from which a family can grow, are the following:

  • Unity
  • Serve
  • Care
  • Unconditional Love
  • Respect
  • Responsibility
  • Accountability
  • Support
  • Trust
  • Authenticity
  • Relationship

These are not the only roots; there are plenty. In fact, the more the roots, the bigger and stronger the family; but the point is to deliver the idea and show you that these roots are connected to something we call “ETHICS.

Let me make it clear, not knowing the real meaning of the word “family” is a disaster. I guess the best question to ask yourself in order to make sure that you grasp the meaning of the term is: Am I just a number in or a true member of a family?

See, being a number in a family is easy; most of those who fall under this description are irresponsible and fail to make decisions. All what they aspire is asking for their rights and seek to be understood. They subtract and never add; they misuse the roots and are ready to be proud or blame others.

On the other hand, a member of a family is who is involved in and seeks to understand the process to fulfill the meaning of the term. He/she knows that one day they will start a family and that it will be a responsibility to carry the roots and evolve them to raise a better generation.

So, are you a number in or a member of a family?
