What’s Your Strong?

Brief background on who I am and why I started Only The Strong Fitness & Athletics

My name is J.D. Guerrero and I am the CEO of Only The Strong Fitness & Athletics. I have been involved in sports and physical activity most of my life! I played high school sports and lettered in Football, Wrestling, and Baseball. After high school, I continued my passion for sports and played a little baseball at Mesa Community College and in the Mexican League. When life got a bit busier, I held on to sports and played on various men’s competitive softball teams and even got paid to play in California. Playing sports fueled my passion of teaching and coaching the youth in our communities. Throughout life’s changes, one constant thing remained…I continued my education!

I graduated with my Associates degree from Mesa Community College in 2003. Then, in 2005 I obtained my Bachelors in Secondary Education with emphasis in Physical Education and Exercise Physiology from Arizona State University. I finished my Master’s degree in Bilingual Multicultural Education with ESL endorsement from Northern Arizona University in 2009.

I have been teaching Physical Education since 2005. I have worked with Boys and Girls Club and taught fitness and sports classes at Lifetime Fitness in Gilbert from 2005-2014. From 2011-2013 I coached Varsity Football and Junior High Baseball. I coached High School Baseball from 2011-2015 and I am currently an assistant football coach at the JV and Varsity level in Gilbert.  I have coached various little league soccer, baseball, and flag football teams. I also currently Coach for ProCamps and NFL Play 60 Camps since 2013. I am first aid and CPR certified, hold a valid finger print clearance card and am AIA Concussion certified.

I am married and the proud father of five very athletic children who keep us busy most evenings and weekends.

Why I started Only The Strong Fitness & Athletics and how it has impacted the community.

As a native of Arizona, with a few moments in California, I grew up in a small town that most people only pass by on their way to San Diego called Yuma, AZ.  Our home was pretty much a single parent home. My step father was an agricultural field worker who migrated for work half the year. My mother did not have the means necessary for my brothers and I to participate in sports outside of school until I was around 12 years old.  I never had the opportunity for any extra training to better my skills in sports and I never attended professional sporting events. Now as a father myself, I wanted to change that in my family.  I decided that I wanted to make a difference in my children and teach them at an early age about sports and fitness, being active, and giving back to the community.

As an advocate of fitness and sports, along with my experience, my passion led me to start training my son in speed and agility with sports specific activities that would help prepare him for the sport he was in, whether it was football, soccer, or baseball. It not only helped him physically, but also prepared him mentally and lifted his confidence in the activities he was in. This led to training some teammates, then nephews and friends. I decided to call it “Only The Strong Fitness & Athletics.” I wasn’t satisfied with only training and wanted to somehow give back to the community to reach those kids and families that couldn’t afford sports and events.  I began a very affordable training sessions for sports training at a local park and also got families to come workout and have fun once a week for my fitness club. For the past three years we created an after summer school fitness club for students at the school I teach for a small fee. With the funds collected, I am able to purchase equipment for the training sessions and also donate to the after-school program in my community.

With the desire to do more for those that could not do the training sessions, I created my logo and my brand of OTS apparel. By also selling the apparel, OTS has been able to impact the community in many ways! We offer hats and fitness apparel to help promote others that are active in the community and share their experiences for motivation.  OTS has paid for kids to participate in sports leagues and various professional sports camps in Arizona and California that include Arizona Cardinals, Oakland Raiders, Reggie Bush, Tavon Austin, Adrian Gonzalez, Larry Fitzgerald, Patrick Peterson, and James Harden camps. OTS has been able to keep families active in the community by participating in events including Run3rd5K and various ASU college sports camps. We have community relations with professional sports teams including the Arizona Diamondbacks, Phoenix Suns, Arizona Cardinals, Arizona Rattlers, and Phoenix Mercury that have donated tickets for families to attend games or as fundraisers. OTS has sponsored adult athletes that participate in sports and competitions that include flag football and softball leagues, Spartan Races and Phoenix Gym Crawl events. OTS has partnered up and collaborated with great events and people in the community like Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warmer’s Ultimate Football Experience event where all participants received an OTS gym towel, Vanessa Ramirez and Latina Strong Foundation where proceeds from OTS apparel went to Breathe 2 Believe lung cancer foundation.  Various fitness boot camp events and shows with fitness trainer Felicia Romero. Proceeds from OTS apparel purchases have also been donated to American Cancer Society and Relay For Life Events.

Only The Strong Fitness & Athletics brand is not just about fitness and sports. It’s about helping others and making a difference in people’s lives. It’s about helping people find their Strong (passion)- what drives them to do and be the person that they are?
