Setting The Mind

I am writing this article during the holy month of Ramadan; and I guess that it is the right time to release a topic that I have been thinking about; especially since we’re entering a season of holidays on my side of the world.

Why is the year twelve months? Why do these twelve months contain the same occasions and holidays? Why do we have the habit of celebrating birthdays? Why is there a New Year resolution? And many questions of that sort come to my mind.

I reached to a conviction that these annual stops are for the periodic maintenance of the mind; it is where the setting of the mind takes place. Years ago, I used to hear that to succeed in your life, you need to change your mindset; and I admit, I used to underestimate this advice. Probably because I did not understand it or I did not know how to actually do it. I thought it was only a matter of shifting your mind from negative to positive thinking; but it is much more than that… it says, “People are enemies of that which they don’t know.” And this is a truth that we can’t deny!

We are spiritual seeds; and the primary purpose of our existence in life is to grow to our potential; so the level of any individual’s growth is determined by the setting of the mind that is set by our choice.

There are two types of mindsets:

  • Fixed mindset:
  • Growth mindset

Having a growth mindset is not the end of the story; because as long as you aspire to have a good life, you will keep on visiting and resetting your mind; to take your growth mindset up a level  – and this requires two things:

  • Intentionality:

–      Growth never comes automatically; neither from experience, nor from training courses.

–      People think that if they just go through life, they will grow without a specific plan for it.

–      Living is not growing.

–      Experience is not the best teacher; evaluated experience is! It is not what you have gone through; it is what you have learned and embraced going through life.

  • Self Discipline:

–      Self discipline is the key to leadership.

–      Vision is the source of self discipline. Once you have vision, everything in your life will be simplified.

–      Most of those who don’t possess self discipline are not aware of their destination; therefore they have nothing to do.

–      People find it hard to change and be disciplined; because they know that they need to reset and challenge all what they have been taught since childhood; even if these beliefs and perceptions serves them no purpose.

My mentor, John C. Maxwell said, “Successful people make right decisions early and manage those decisions daily.” This was one of the statements that really made me ask myself:

  • What do I really want?
  • What really matters to me?
  • What are my important decisions that I need to make early?
  • What are the things that I need to eliminate from my daily life?
  • What new habits can I establish?

I started from there… so when I experienced and understood the effect of the mindset on our lives and how important it is to set it and update it from time to time; I made a decision to make this periodic maintenance not only during the annual stops, but also after every event, breakthrough or even challenges, because I consider these stops as the road signs that give a sense of direction. Also, the signs that uplift you to advanced roads of life.

Whenever I travel to attend a training event, I make sure that I take few days as a break after the event is over to “visit” my mindset, reflect, evaluate, reset the settings and apply the new changes.

The annual stops during the years of our life are a blessing to us that we should be grateful for; because of them, we are reminded that we are full of energy; and that all we need to do is the “mind setting” to upgrade our life. Therefore, we value time and evaluate our progress.

I will leave you with this great statement by Albert Schweitzer when he asserted, “The great secret of success is to go through life as a man who never gets used up.”

You have a lot within; and you are limitless. Set your mind to upgrade your life.
