The Exchange Experience

CCI Greenheart Exchange Student Hosting!

Since 1985, CCI Greenheart has created global leaders by facilitating cultural exchange and service learning opportunities for international students and professionals coming to the United States. Their diverse programs foster diplomacy and intercultural understanding between people of all nations.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? Do you enjoy learning about and exploring other cultures or want to help your children learn about the world? Then hosting a foreign exchange student might be a perfect fit for you and your family!

Why Host A Stranger You Might Ask?

According to Hebrews 13:2 CEV Be sure to welcome strangers into your home. By doing this, some people have welcomed angels as guests, without even knowing it.

Over the last 4 years, my family and I have hosted 10 exchange students from 10 different countries and have created a life-long bond with each one.

One of the most undervalued parts of hosting an international exchange student is seeing your own culture from a different perspective. While hosting a student from another country is a great way to learn about their culture and customs, it is also a great way to learn more about our way of life!

Here is a wonderful link that can assist in bringing additional knowledge and understanding to the exchange experience from the host family perspective.  https://www.cci-exchange.com/host-families/. Keep in mind that it is a mutual opportunity for growth and development on both sides.

Exchange students will get to experience 10 months of being smack dab in the middle of American culture and traditions. Most of them will never have celebrated such holidays as Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas or events such as a high school football game or prom. These will end up being some of the highlights of their programs here in the United States.

Here is how one Czech student shares her experience, ‘My exchange experience changed me completely. It made me step out of my comfort zone in which I was living before and compelled me to became an independent and mature person, who needs to set up in a new environment, communicate with foreign people, and take consequences for all achievements. I became more open-minded, understanding, and adaptive. I learned a lot about myself, about other people and about relations between people. I learned how to appreciate my family back home as well as my new host family. I recognized a lot of new cultures because my school campus was full of people from all around the world and I also met another exchange students here. Moreover, my host family became almost like my own. They cared about me very deeply. They also took me to many interesting places such as Phoenix Zoo, Westgate, and various restaurants. They taught me about their culture and my host mom cooked a lot of traditional food for me. I don’t remember how I was as a person before, but I’m sure I left that old “me” at the airport in the day I left and I am now leaving as a new version of myself.’

Benefits of hosting:
• Develop a connection to and learn about another culture. Many families use technology to connect before the students arrive in the U.S. and stay in touch long after they go back home.
• Enjoy showing a young person around your community and share “typical” American culture.
• Students become actual “members” of your family, not just visitors.
• Receive discounts on CCI Greenheart’s Greenheart Travel programs through the Host Family Circle.
• The federal government currently allows a $50 charitable tax deduction per month.
• You can specify interests and gender to help select a student.
• All students and families receive orientation and support materials.
Please note, students come with their own health insurance and spending money for travel, fun, and snacks. Host families will provide 3 meals a day and reasonable transportation to activities.
